Chapeau
In the shadows
A lowbrow poet
And the lower
Sadder brim
Who loved him
Not for long
But how

Explanation
We had been looking for Danna, the hatmaker, at the Kailua Sunday market, to make a hat with a low crown for me.
That night, I dreamt we found two feathered hats at that market, one a rakish, low-crowned felt musketeer hat with one brim sewn to the crown similar to one I’d found in Venice, the other with an even lower crown.
We decided to give the hats as presents to our granddaughter and her boyfriend, who had just visited and gone to the market. I didn’t want the one who got the lower crown to feel less appreciated, so I wrote this note for them.
The French say “chapeau!” and doff their hats in homage to someone like a musketeer.
