Fireworks at New Year's

By Peter Halstead

In the lowering atmosphere
Of the storm’s far reaches,
No fireworks at New Year’s
Need apply to our soggy beaches,

No human works at least, because,
With the pink mist clotting
Into dark and sky’s gauze
Spreading on the blotter,

No rockets with their flash
Of sulfur dare appear,
But in the air nonetheless a dash
And smear of light, a gulf where

Sheer night pulses with white sheets
Beyond the limits that our dim flares
Seek with their minor tries at heat,
Because in the windings of the year

There’s a vaster kind of fire here.
