Just Add Water

By Peter Halstead

Along the beach’s neon cosmos,
The sky is something to perfect
With inner tubes and cosmos,
Summer girls, in retrospect;
Waving human palms to make
Life lines out of towels and pails,
To tumble for the ocean’s sake,
For these torches, for the sails;
And for one of you, my dream:
Not from here and not this light,
But, as it happened, just the same
As my adolescent night.
