L'ode Sur La Peau Sensible

By Peter Halstead

Walking down these
               Paris streets
Reminds me of a line
               from Keats,
That lying truth-is-beauty scam
               (Poetry’s gorillagram):
The idiot savant
               Of such a rule
Must have gone
               To beauty school:
But if his witty rhyme
               Is right
(And the intellect
               Is based on sight),
The reality is that youth
               Must have makeup
On its truth—
               Le raffermissement
Du buste
               Au lieu de
Marcel Proust.
