By Margaret Noodin

Omaada’adoon ziigwan-mazina’igan
She follows the map of spring

anaamayi’ii baashkabigiizhigong
under the sky’s one bursting eye

gaye apane dibiki-giizisan basangwaabinid
and the ever-blinking moon

mii abid ningide-niibinong.
into the melt of summer.

Onaabibii’aan ziiginigaadenig ziibiin
He traces the pouring river

zhaabwayi’ii endazhi-baashkaabigwaniinig
through blossoms bursting

niibina-enaandenig maamawaginjigewinan
multicolored equations

waawaagitigweyaakwaang.
winding into the woods.

Imaa epiichi-maamwibemaadizijig
There while society

turns itself inside out

agawaatesewaad gaye waaseyaaziwaad
the shadow and the shining

find balance.
