Nightmare

By Peter Halstead

To save you from the demons of the night,
As you save us by day from the ghosts
Who hope we’ll pay them not to write
Those made-up stories in The Post,

Who daily save us from the dark
That crowds around us in the skies,
From the clouds around our wandering barque,
From waves that drown our sleeping eyes,

Who, like many wives,
Spends unconscious hours
Saving all the family’s lives:
To save you, I have no such powers,

My only role to steady
Your dozing griefs,
So you can keep composing
Donizetti in your sleep.
