The Time Before Now at CIACLA

On Thursday, April 14th, Contemporary Irish Arts Center Los Angeles (CIACLA) will host The Time Before Now, a poetry reading and film event.

The Time Before Now will highlight Irish and Irish-American writers whose work deals with memory and the past. Featuring readings from new and innovative work, the participating writers will challenge, expand, and offer ways to reconsider our own understanding of memory. Guests of this event will receive a free copy of a small surprise publication provided by Poetry Ireland.

The event will include a screening of four poetry films we co-produced with Poetry Ireland, all of which capture poets from Ireland reading their own recent work. Director Matthew Thompson's films build a rich world for each poem, grounding text and performance via cinematic camerawork that crafts an immersive sense of place for the performers to inhabit.

Still from "Segue" by Stephen Sexton, directed by Matthew Thompson.

The films featured will be "Segue" by Stephen Sexton, "My Sister as a Body" by Kayssie K, "This Is Just to Say (The Gays Will Steal Your Fruit)" by Dawn Watson, and "Paper Planes" by Dagogo Hart. The showcase will also feature live readings by Sheila McMullin, Dean Robertson, Marc-Ivan O’Gorman, Sarah Nevin, and Jenny Minniti Shippey, as well as additional poetry films by FeliSpeaks and Erin Schalk.

Book now to attend this event at 6pm PST on April 14th, 2022, at Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica, California.
