Run (it’s dark outside)

By Ciara Ní É

In bed, my head’s a mess of tangled string
I close my eyes and see emails fly in
Phone hopping, messages received
Devices set to silent, but inside I buzz and beep
I’ve a list of missed calls, and unclicked links to follow
From group chats with too much action to swallow
Bookmarks, articles I’ll never read
I no longer just think, I think up captions and tweets
And everything’s backed up, never delete
Never stop, never take stock, never breathe

It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done
Rat race won’t be won but still all of us must run
The whole wide world is always switched on
It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done

Eyes drawn down, heads in the Cloud,
Sound drowned out, we’re all androids now,
I can’t leave the gaff without using Google Maps
I got an app to help me spend less time on apps
Hands twitch to cameras at the whiff of a like
Retweet, double tap, check back all night
Swipe left, swipe left, swipe left, swipe right
But when they say hi, don’t reply, just continue to swipe…

It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done
Rat race won’t be won but still all of us must run
The whole wide world is always switched on
It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done

Washed out, I drop down before the TV
to block out some hours and wipe my mind clean
but a moth to the light in my pocket, I unlock my screen
and by reflex my hand checks work emails....
Then it’s dark outside, and an hour has gone
And I’m hunched in one position, elbow gone numb
Hazy on why I even opened the phone
A hungry laziness keeping me scrolling

It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done
Rat race won’t be won but still all of us must run
The whole wide world is always switched on
It’s dark outside but there’s more to be done
