Legna Rodríguez Iglesias was born in Camagüey, Cuba, in 1984. She has won the 2011 Julio Cortázar Ibero-American Story Prize, the 2016 Casa de Las Américas Prize in Theater, and the 2016 Paz Prize for Poetry from the National Poetry Series. She is the author of the novels Mayonesa bien brillante (Ediciones Matanzas, 2012); Las analfabetas, (Bokeh Press, 2015); y Mi novia preferida fue un bulldog francés (Editorial Alfaguara, Narrativa Hispánica, 2017), which was published in English as My Favorite Girlfriend Was a French Bulldog (McSweeney’s, 2017). She has also published several books of short stories and several of poetry; those translated into English include Miami Century Fox (Akashic Books, 2017) and the selected poems A little body are many parts / Un cuerpocito son muchas partes (Bloodaxe, 2019).
Rodríguez Iglesias writes the column Irrelevante about Miami in the digital magazine El Estornudo. In one of her articles, she writes:
"That day I walked all along Calle Ocho from 10th Avenue to Ponce de León, which would be more or less 40th Avenue. It was sunny and things appeared more beautiful and mine than usual. I photographed the everyday advertisements, the most ordinary corners, the dirty store windows, the puddles of muddy water, the overgrown grass next to businesses, the facades of restaurants, people eating with masks, the empty cinema, a massage parlor, a store window full of Kens, a medical marijuana shop, a building under construction, a crane, a sign in a sublime patch of grass that read 'EXPERT IN LOVE SPELLS,' just before the wind took it away."
