Chi Yn Kernow / A House in Cornwall

By Tim Saunders
Read by Edward Rowe

                                                    Life of Saint Meriasek, 4293

I shall have a house in Cornwall,
cool running water I shall have through the gravel,
earth I shall have and soil,
‘but on the other hand’ I shall have and ‘but still’:
‘perhaps’ there was and ‘but’,
dark seed there was in soil,
I have sand and gravel:
I shall have a house in Cornwall.

I had a house in Cornwall,
I had the leaves of a country’s Springtime,
a word I had and a conversation,
I had wisdom and nonsense;
there was the strength of a perverse wind in nonsense,
living silence there was in conversation:
I have the tiller of a hollow ship,
I had a house in Cornwall.

I have a house in Cornwall,
bees I have and lice;
I have a gate and an altar,
the hateful I have and the dear;
the work I have and the grievance,
mine is the bitter and the grievance;
Death is on an altar:
I have a flame against a host of lice,
I have a house in Cornwall.
I shall have a house in Cornwall,
mine will be a house in Cornwall;
I shall have a cool late afternoon,
light I shall have and stones:
I have acorns and stones,
mine is cool shade:
yet shall I look for a house in the land,
I shall have a house in Cornwall.
